Connect Your Computers

Computer Networking

There are a lot of advantages of having your computers at home on a network. You can share printers, files, and even your internet connection. You can choose to set it up by running wires around your house, or you can spend some some more money and hook everything up wirelessly.

Cable/DSL Routers

If you have a broadband internet connection (DSL or Cable), you may be able to hookup a Cable/DSL Router to your Cable/DSL Modem to share your internet connection with other computers at your home.

Fortunately the default settings will work with your computer as long as you haven't changed anything. As long as your Cable/DSL Modem has an ethernet connection, you should be good to go.

Wireless Routers

With your broadband internet connection (DSL or Cable), if you are willing to invest in wireless equipment, you can hook up your computers together without having to run ethernet wires all over your house.

You can go cheap and get equipment on the old 802.11b standard, but I recommend getting routers running 802.11g (compatible with 802.11b), or even better new equipment that is even faster.

If you purchase a wireless router, I would recommend getting wireless adapters of the same brand, preferrably the same line. You don't need a wireless adapter for any of the computers you can easily run a wire to. A wired connection will always be faster and more reliable.
