Spyware Is Everywhere
The biggest problems I've ran into in the last few years with the
worst impact on a computer's performance and the user's experience
is caused by the plethora of spyware trying to invade your computer
everywhere you go.
Strategies
There are a lot of ways to prevent getting spyware on your computer.
The best way is to be smart about how you use your internet connection.
- Don't download free programs from unknown companies
(ie Screen Savers, Smiley Programs)
- Don't open attachments that you don't expect,
especially in dangerous file formats (ie exe, cmd, scr)
except safe file formats (ie pdf, jpg, gif, mpg, mp3)
Once you realize something is not right with your computer,
like unexpected pop-ups, extreme slowness, problems opening
various computer programs, etc, the first thing you should do
is scan your computer for spy-ware and/or viruses.
Anti-Spyware Software
Unfortunately, a lot of the programs out there that
supposedly clean off spyware do the opposite, they install their own.
There are few well-known good places to go for
reputable anti-spyware solutions that actually work.
Anti-Virus Software
While spyware is a big threat, viruses are much more malicious (damaging to your computer)
and can spread without you doing anything.
It is essential that you have some sort of anti-virus program to
prevent from getting one, and spreading it to others on your contact lists.
While these claim they are also good at battling spyware,
they are not very effective at that, so you still need a spyware solution.
